Day 9
Early morning flight to Abu Simbel, for a tour of the Temples.
In 1968, the temples of Ramses II and Nefertari were separated
into sections, reinforced and reconstructed on the top of the
Libyan Mountain Range, just above the Nile. On the northern
σπέος of the Temple of Ramses II
there are 4 Colossi of the Pharaoh facing the east. He is sitting
on his throne, smiling and wearing the double crown of Upper
and Lower Egypt, while his subjects, smaller princes and princesses,
the king's mother and his wife Nefertari are standing at his
feet.
The same motif is replicated at the Temple of Nefertari, although
the Colossi are replaced with statues of the queen, in Athor
- Sothis dress, with her children alongside.
